Carpet Tiles vs Carpet: Which Is Cheaper?

Carpet Tiles vs Carpet: Which Is Cheaper?

If you're choosing between carpet tiles and a traditional roll of carpet, price is usually the first question. The short answer: carpet tiles often work out cheaper over the life of the floor, and used or matching clearance tiles can be cheaper from day one.

Here's a plain comparison to help you decide.

The price per square metre

In Ireland, retail carpet tiles typically start from around €24–€40 per m². Broadloom (roll) carpet varies widely depending on quality, and underlay and fitting are usually extra.

At Used Carpet Tiles Ireland we sell:

  • Used carpet tiles, mostly Interface: €5–€8/m²
  • New nylon carpet tiles from brands including Burmatex, Zetex, Shaw Contract and Christy Carpets: €11–€14/m²

For a full breakdown, including tackifier and a 100 m² example, see our Ireland Carpet Tile Price Guide.

Less waste when you buy

Roll carpet comes in fixed widths, so awkward rooms often mean paying for offcuts that end up in a skip. Carpet tiles are 50 × 50 cm, so you buy close to the area you need. Roughly 4 tiles cover 1 m², plus a small allowance for cuts.

No underlay to buy

Commercial carpet tiles have their own backing and are usually laid straight onto a clean, firm floor with tackifier. Tackifier costs roughly €50–€100 per 100 m². Traditional carpet usually needs underlay and grippers too.

Easier to fit yourself

Carpet tiles can be laid one at a time, which makes them a realistic DIY job for many rooms. Roll carpet is heavy and usually needs stretching, so most people pay a fitter. Our simple guide to laying carpet tiles walks you through it.

Cheaper to repair

This is where tiles really save money. If a coffee spill or a worn patch ruins one area, you lift and replace a few tiles instead of the whole floor. Keep a few spare tiles from the same lot for this.

When roll carpet might suit better

Carpet can feel softer underfoot in a bedroom, and some people prefer the look of a seamless finish in a home. Carpet tiles suit offices, shops, gyms, studios, events, garages, home offices and hard-working rooms.

Are carpet tiles good for home use?

Yes, if you pick the right tile. Our A-grade used tiles and new nylon tiles can work well in many homes. B-grade tiles are worn and aren't for home use; they suit film sets, events, temporary flooring and some offices. See how we grade our tiles.

The verdict

For most offices, commercial spaces and practical rooms, carpet tiles are the cheaper choice: less waste, no underlay, easier fitting and cheap repairs. Choosing used or matching clearance stock makes the saving bigger again.
